Applications
-
Petroleum Refining (Alkylation Units)
Hydrogen fluoride is a critical catalyst in the alkylation process, which produces high-octane gasoline. Refining facilities use HF gas detectors to detect leaks and ensure workplace safety.
Where HF Gas Detectors Are Used:
✔ Alkylation Units – Monitors HF levels in refining processes.
✔ HF Storage & Transfer Areas – Ensures leak detection in pipelines and storage tanks.
✔ Cooling & Acid Circulation Systems – Prevents acid mist accumulation. -
Chemical Manufacturing & Industrial Acid Production
Hydrogen fluoride is used in the production of hydrofluoric acid (HF), fluorochemicals, and refrigerants. Fixed HF detectors help prevent accidental leaks, spills, and vapor releases in chemical plants.
Where HF Gas Detectors Are Used:
✔ Hydrofluoric Acid Production Plants – Ensures safe handling of HF gas.
✔ Fluorochemical & Refrigerant Manufacturing – Detects leaks in synthesis processes.
✔ Bulk Storage & Transfer Areas – Monitors gas levels during chemical distribution. -
Semiconductor & Electronics Manufacturing
HF is used in silicon wafer etching, circuit board cleaning, and plasma etching. Fixed detectors prevent toxic gas exposure in cleanrooms and semiconductor fabs.
Where HF Gas Detectors Are Used:
✔ Semiconductor Fabrication Cleanrooms – Detects HF leaks in wafer etching chambers.
✔ Electronic Component Manufacturing – Monitors HF levels in PCB cleaning and fluorination.
✔ Exhaust Ventilation Systems – Ensures efficient removal of HF fumes.

Safety Limits for HF Gas Exposure
Given its toxicity, strict safety limits are enforced to protect workers from dangerous levels of exposure. Regulatory bodies, such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), and ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists), have set permissible exposure limits (PELs) and threshold limit values (TLVs) for HF gas.
for HF gas is 3 ppm (parts per million) for an 8-hour workday.
(Recommended Exposure Limit) is 0.5 ppm, with a short-term exposure limit (STEL) of 1 ppm.
for HF is 0.5 ppm as an 8-hour TWA (Time-Weighted Average).

What is Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) Gas?
HF gas is colorless, odorless, and highly toxic. It is often used in applications such as alkylation in petroleum refining, etching in semiconductor manufacturing, and fluorine gas production. The gas is also utilized in the production of hydrofluoric acid (HF), which has widespread uses in industries such as metal cleaning, fertilizer manufacturing, and pharmaceutical production. However, the toxic nature of HF means even minor leaks or exposure can have life-threatening consequences, making effective gas detection systems imperative for workplace safety.
