Applications
-
Hydrogen Production & Storage Facilities
Hydrogen is produced via electrolysis, steam methane reforming (SMR), and biomass gasification. Fixed detectors are needed to monitor leaks in production, storage, and distribution areas.
Where Hydrogen Gas Detectors Are Used:
✔ Electrolysis Units – Detects hydrogen leaks from water-splitting systems.
✔ Hydrogen Storage Tanks & Pipelines – Ensures containment integrity in pressurized systems.
✔ Hydrogen Compression & Distribution Stations – Monitors high-pressure leaks during transfer. -
Hydrogen Fuel Cells & Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles
Hydrogen fuel cells are used in electric vehicles (FCEVs), backup power systems, and industrial machinery. Fixed hydrogen gas detectors monitor leaks in fueling stations, vehicle maintenance bays, and power systems.
Where Hydrogen Gas Detectors Are Used:
✔ Hydrogen Fueling Stations – Ensures safe refueling operations for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
✔ Fuel Cell Power Plants – Monitors leaks in stationary hydrogen fuel cell systems.
✔ Hydrogen Storage & Dispensing Units – Detects leaks in gas cylinders and high-pressure tanks. -
Chemical & Petrochemical Industry
Hydrogen is widely used in refining crude oil, ammonia production, and chemical synthesis. Fixed hydrogen gas detectors help prevent leaks in high-risk processing areas.
Where Hydrogen Gas Detectors Are Used:
✔ Refineries (Hydrocracking & Hydrotreating Units) – Detects hydrogen leaks in high-pressure refining processes.
✔ Ammonia & Fertilizer Production Plants – Ensures safety in hydrogen-based ammonia synthesis (Haber process).
✔ Petrochemical Processing Units – Prevents leaks in hydrogenation reactions.

Characteristics of Hydrogen
Hydrogen gas (H₂) is a highly flammable and colorless, odorless gas used in a variety of industrial applications such as chemical production, petroleum refining, energy generation, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and metal industries. Despite being a valuable resource in these sectors, hydrogen presents significant safety risks due to its flammability and explosive nature. It has the potential to form explosive mixtures with air at concentrations as low as 4% hydrogen in air, making it extremely dangerous in confined spaces or environments where leaks are not detected promptly. Given its lack of odor and invisibility, relying on proper gas detection systems becomes crucial to preventing hazardous situations, protecting workers, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

Key safety limits for hydrogen gas include
OSHA: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration does not specify a permissible exposure limit (PEL) for hydrogen gas; however, the lower explosive limit (LEL) for hydrogen is 4% in air, and the upper explosive limit (UEL) is 75%. These limits are used to monitor and maintain safe conditions in environments where hydrogen is used.
NIOSH: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends maintaining hydrogen gas concentrations well below the 4% LEL to ensure that no explosive conditions arise.
ACGIH: The American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) recommends monitoring hydrogen gas exposure in accordance with general safety practices for flammable gases, with particular attention paid to the lower explosive limit.
