  • Petrochemical Industry

The chemical and petrochemical industry is a dangerous workplace, petrochemicals bring significant risks during production. Chemical processing and petrochemical plant can have a wide range of toxic gas hazards, flammable gas hazards or asphyxiant gas hazards.

  • Coal and Steel Industries

There are many different processes employed in making and forming steel and each stage generates and uses potentially hazardous gases. Coke ovens, the sinter plant, blast furnaces, forming operations as well as secondary steel and continuous casting use or produce dangerous levels of gases.

  • City Gas Industry

The gas network connects producers, processors, storage, transmission and distribution functions. Gas distribution describes the activity of providing piped gas (commonly methane) to industrial, commercial and residential properties. All companies involved in the production, processing and distribution of gas need to protect people and plant from explosive and toxic gas hazards.

A colourless and pungent gas, ammonia (NH3) is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen

Ammonia is a flammable gas, though it requires significant effort to ignite. Naturally present in the air, soil, and water, it is the sole widely recognized alkali gas.

While ammonia is a natural compound, its irritant properties become more severe as its concentration rises, making it highly toxic at elevated levels. To protect workers and maintain a safe environment, it is crucial to monitor exposure using an ammonia detector.

Characteristics of Ammonia

Hazard

Toxic, corrosive, and a strong irritant to the respiratory system, eyes, and skin. Difficult to burn (LEL 15%).

Exposure Limits

  • (OSHA) PEL\TWA: 50 ppm
  • (ACGIH) STEL: 35 ppm/ 15 min
  • (OSHA) IDLH: 500 ppm / 30 min.

Industries present

Fertiliser production, refrigeration, chemical manufacturing, agriculture.
